What E13 means

You open the lid of a cycle gone quiet and find the drum still holding water and the clothes sodden. The display shows E13 because the control gave the drain pump a set amount of time to empty the tub and the water level never fell far enough. Rather than spin a drum full of water, the washer halts the program and waits for you to deal with it.

Common causes of E13

  • Pump or its filter clogged with lint, coins or other small items
  • Drain hose kinked, crushed behind the machine or blocked inside
  • Oversudsing from too much detergent, which locks the pump with foam
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Unplug the washer and wait until the drum is no longer sloshing. 2. Look behind the machine and straighten any bend in the drain hose. 3. If your model has a small access panel at the lower front, set towels and a shallow pan beneath it, then slowly unscrew the filter and clear out whatever you find. 4. Screw the filter back in straight and plug the washer in again.

! Why to stop there
  • The filter area sits low, close to where the power cord routes, so working there while plugged in invites a shock.
  • Pushing a blockage farther into the pump instead of pulling it out can seize the motor and turn a cleaning job into a pump replacement.
  • A filter cap that goes back on cross-threaded will drip at the front of the machine for months.
  • Tilting a drum full of suds and water to reach the hose can destabilize the whole washer.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

E13E13 questions
Why is my door locked with soaking clothes inside?

The lock stays engaged while the control senses water in the tub. Wait several minutes for the release; if the door stays shut after the water is gone, the lock itself needs a technician. Pulling the door against the latch can break it.

Can I stop E13 coming back by using less soap?

Often yes. Too much detergent makes suds that slow the pump and trigger the timeout. Use a high-efficiency detergent in the amount printed on the cap, and run an extra rinse after any oversudsed load.

Is it okay to hand-wring the clothes and rerun the cycle?

Drain the drum first, then try a drain-and-spin program. If E13 returns right away, something is physically blocking the water path, and repeating cycles only strains the pump motor.
