Gas Range Clicking but Not Lighting: Safety First

Repeated clicking without a flame is usually a worn igniter or dirty burner. Learn how to separate a routine fix from a gas smell that calls for immediate action.

Click, click, click, and no flame. Before anything else, sniff the air. What you smell decides whether this is a routine repair or an urgent situation.

If you smell gas

Switch every burner knob off. Do not try to relight anything. Open windows and doors, and close the gas shutoff valve if you can reach it safely. Keep it closed until a technician has looked at the range. Gas odor together with an ignition problem points to a supply issue, such as a loose fitting or a valve, and that is a different category from a worn part.

If there is no odor

The usual causes are quite ordinary:

  • An igniter that has worn out and no longer throws a strong spark
  • A burner cap that is seated crooked
  • Food residue or moisture blocking the burner ports so the spark cannot reach the gas

Turn the knob off between attempts rather than letting it click for a long stretch. Letting the burner sit with the knob open can build up gas, and a steady clicking sound does not mean it is safe to keep trying.

What you can try

  1. Let the surface dry completely if anything was spilled.
  2. Lift off the cap and head, then reseat them level.
  3. Clear the ports with a soft brush or a toothpick, never a metal pin.

After cleaning, let everything dry before trying again, because a damp burner is one of the simplest reasons a spark fails to light the gas.

If clicking continues, a technician can test or replace the igniter. Our range repair page covers the visit. For a routine case, book a visit; if gas is ever present, call us right away.
