A washer stuck full of water and showing E18 often just has a clogged filter. Here is how to empty it safely, and how to tell when the pump is the real culprit.
The drum is full of gray water, the door will not release, and the display says E18. The washer is telling you that water is not leaving the drum. Of all the codes on this machine, this is among the few where a homeowner can do something useful before calling anyone.
Coins, buttons, hair ties, and wads of lint travel down the drain path and settle in a small filter near the pump. When it clogs, the pump cannot push water out and the cycle halts. Cleaning it takes about ten minutes.
Run a short rinse or spin to confirm the water leaves. A filter that is not seated all the way will drip on the next load, so check the cap once more.
If the drum still holds water after the filter is clear, the drain pump has probably stopped working or the hose is blocked further along. Those jobs need the machine opened, which is where a technician comes in.
Check the pockets of jeans and kids’ clothes next time, since small items are the most frequent cause of this particular clog and are easy to catch early.
See how a washer repair visit works, then book a technician if E18 returns.
