Look at the tall backguard and you can date the HGS5053UC. It is a gas range from an earlier generation, 47 3/4 inches high with the backguard, with five burners of 71,000 BTU together. The oven is 5.0 cu ft and runs bake, convection bake, broil and a pyrolytic self-clean cycle. Current Bosch slide-ins carry their controls on a front fascia. Here they sit up on the backguard, away from the oven heat, so they last well.
The self-clean cycle causes most of the trouble. Very high cleaning temperatures wear the door lock mechanism and the door seal over many cycles, and the lock can stay engaged afterward. Lamps and switches on the backguard panel also age.
If the door stays locked, let the range cool completely, then try resetting power at the breaker. Do not force the door.
Give it time to cool all the way, since the lock holds until the cavity is at a safe temperature. If the door is still stuck, turn off power at the breaker for a few minutes. When that does not help, call us and do not pull on the door.
The cycle is normal, but its extreme heat wears the door seal and lock mechanism over many runs. Using it a few times a year is kinder than running it monthly.
That is how this generation was built. The controls sit away from the heat of the oven door, which is why they tend to last unusually well, while the lamps and switches there age with time.
