Cabinetry hides most of a BCM8450UC. It is Bosch’s flagship built-in coffee machine, set into a wall of cupboards, and the people who own one are generally the people who drink double shots every morning. The AromaPro double brewing system and OneTouch DoubleCup preparation turn that routine into a single press, so the machine works hard all year.
Everything depends on the brew unit reaching its full travel on every cup. When it cannot, the display reports Error 8, because the unit failed to initialize, and that is the commonest reason we are called out for this model. Next in line is the heating path: scale collects inside it, and the machine answers with Error 5. Over a longer span, hard beans wear the grinder.
Our visit follows that same order. We examine the brew unit, check how the heating path looks and when the machine was last descaled, and then listen to the grinder. The built-in descaling program does most of the protective work, provided it is actually run.
Several years in most kitchens, as long as it is cleaned the way the manual describes. How many cups you brew daily and how reliably you descale count for more than any fixed figure.
It cuts the risk a great deal, but only if it runs on schedule. Cycles that get skipped are the main reason this model ends up showing Error 5.
Switch off, take out the brew unit, rinse it as the manual describes and refit it carefully. If the error returns after that, the unit is sticking and needs a technician, who can inspect its drive.
