What iD means

Erratic ice production is often the first thing owners notice before iD. The repair manual abbreviates this probe IDUCT and puts it at the evaporator, where it shows Lo for a break and Hi for a short. It watches the duct that sends cold air to the ice maker, which is why a bad reading appears there first, as cubes that are small, missing or fused.

Common causes of iD

  • Ice duct sensor that has gone open-circuit or shorted
  • Plug at the board that has shifted out of its socket
  • Ice around the duct that has loosened or disturbed the sensor's mounting
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Switch the refrigerator off at the outlet or breaker. 2. Look in the ice maker compartment for fused ice around the air opening and remove it by hand. 3. Plug the unit back in. Clearing a packed duct before our visit helps, and if iD comes back we will need to test the sensor.

! Why to stop there
  • A screwdriver or knife used on the ice can damage the duct or the sensor beside it.
  • Hot water poured into the compartment can reach the wiring.
  • The ice may be a result and not the cause, so clearing it alone can bring the code back.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

iDiD questions
Why is my ice maker acting up with iD?

The sensor monitors the duct that supplies cold air to the ice maker. When its reading is unreliable, production can turn inconsistent, with small cubes or none.

Does iD mean the ice maker itself is bad?

Not necessarily so. The ice maker may be fine; the code points to the sensor that monitors its air supply, which we test separately. The ice maker itself is a separate part we can also check.

Will clearing the ice fix it?

Only if the ice was the whole problem. If iD stays once the duct is clear, the sensor or its connection needs testing, and we price it in writing first.
