Pinehurst has gone through three names. A post office opened here in 1860 as Prairie Home, became Hunter's Retreat in 1871, and took the name Pinehurst in 1904, after the International-Great Northern Railroad came through from Bryan to Spring.

By 1885 the town shipped lumber and cotton and had six sawmills. Today the unincorporated area of about nine square miles, at FM 149, FM 1774 and Highway 249, held 5,195 people in 2020, with homes on wooded lots between Magnolia and Tomball.
