The usual story is a self-clean cycle that ends and leaves the oven door shut tight, with E028 on the display. The range is telling you that the door lock mechanism did not do its job, either holding when it should have let go or failing to report a position. Until the lock clears, the oven cavity stays closed off, though the burners on top generally keep working.
1. Do not pull, pry or lever the door; that can bend the latch. 2. Let the oven cool all the way down, since a locked door right after self-clean is often just heat. 3. Switch the range off at the breaker for a couple of minutes, then restore power. 4. If the door still will not open, leave it and call us.
In most cases yes. The surface burners run independently of the oven door lock, so cooking on top is normally still possible. Just keep pans away from the oven door area while it stays locked and hot.
Sooner than later. You lose access to the oven, and a lock that is wearing out can fail in a different way next time, such as not locking during a clean.
It can free a temporary lockout, which is why it is worth one try. If the lock is actually failing, the code comes back, and the lock assembly needs attention.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
