Crystal Beach stretches about seven miles along Highway 87 in the middle of the Bolivar Peninsula, and it is the peninsula's largest community. Rebuilt homes here stand high on pilings, and most owners split their time between the beach and the mainland.
What we find in Crystal Beach homes, and how it shapes a Bosch repair here.
The area was known as Patton, with a Patton Beach post office from 1898 to 1900, and took the Crystal Beach name in the early 1940s. It incorporated in 1971 and disincorporated in 1987. Around 80 percent of property owners have been counted as weekenders, so many houses sit empty midweek.
The Bolivar Peninsula Special Utility District supplies Crystal Beach. Since 2004 it has bought treated surface water from the Lower Neches Valley Authority's plant near Winnie, replacing older peninsula wells, and it serves more than 6,400 connections from Port Bolivar to High Island.
Hurricane Ike in 2008 destroyed about 90 percent of the beachfront homes in Crystal Beach. Rebuilt houses now stand on 20-foot pilings, which keeps the living level high but leaves anything stored or installed on the ground floor exposed to salt, sand and the next surge.
Raised beach houses usually have a Bosch dishwasher, a range and a stacked or compact laundry pair on the living level, with a refrigerator or freezer sometimes kept below. Rentals tend to favor sturdy, simple models.
Getting to Crystal Beach means either the Galveston ferry or the long drive around through Winnie, so we book visits ahead, usually the next day or later in the week. Tell us your checkout and check-in times for rentals, and we will try to arrive in that gap.
Houses on tall pilings put appliances at the top of long stairs, which matters if a part or a whole unit needs to come out. We bring the right dolly and straps, but it helps to clear the stairway and know where the nearest outlet is to the appliance. Ground-level freezers and spare refrigerators under the house deserve a check after any high tide that reaches them; salt water on the base often means rust spreading to the wiring.
Not usually. We plan for long stairs and bring equipment for carrying parts. If an appliance needs replacing, we confirm access and weight before scheduling, so nothing surprises us on the day.
Upstairs is safer from salt and water. Freezers under raised houses get sand, salt spray and occasional tide water. If yours must stay below, keep it off the slab on a platform and check the plug and base regularly.
That is how we usually work the peninsula. We group Crystal Beach, Port Bolivar and High Island visits on the same day, which makes it easier to offer a window that fits your plans.
Book in about a minute, or call the desk. Same-day windows inside the Loop on most days, next-day across the rest of Houston.
