The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway came through the area in 1877, and the town incorporated in January 1978. By the 1980s it had absorbed Alta Loma and Arcadia. The population reached 12,735 in 2020, many living in single-family homes on larger lots outside dense subdivisions.
