Kemah's name comes from a Karankawa word said to mean wind in my face, and that wind comes straight off Galveston Bay. Behind the boardwalk crowds is a small town of about 1,800 people whose homes face the same salt and surge as the waterfront.

John H. Kipp Sr. opened the Kemah post office in 1907. The Clear Creek Channel, cut in the 1950s, brought a shrimp fleet, and Hurricane Carla badly damaged the town in 1961. Kemah became a general law city in 1966; Landry's opened the boardwalk in 1998 on the old waterfront.
Galveston County WCID No. 12 provides water in Kemah. The Gulf Coast Water Authority laid a line along Highway 146 to the district in 1991, and today WCID 12 receives treated Brazos River water from the Mackey plant in Texas City.
Hurricane Ike in 2008 pushed a 17-foot wall of water onto the boardwalk and wrecked nearly every ride except the Boardwalk Bullet. After a surge like that, any appliance that was dried out instead of replaced deserves a close look at its wiring and mounting brackets.
Bayside homes and townhouses tend to have compact laundry and a 24-inch dishwasher. Kitchens in renovated houses near the channel more often hold a gas range or cooktop with a vented hood and a counter-depth refrigerator.
Kemah traffic depends on the season. On summer weekends the area around the boardwalk and the Highway 146 bridge slows to a crawl, so we steer appointments to weekday mornings when we can. Next-day windows are normal here, and visits are grouped with Clear Lake Shores and Bacliff.
Range hoods work harder in kitchens where seafood gets fried or boiled often, and the grease filters clog faster than owners expect. A hood that sounds louder than it used to or no longer pulls steam usually needs its filters soaked in hot soapy water, not a new motor. For gas cooktops, a burner that clicks but does not light is often just a wet or dirty igniter cap; let it dry fully before calling.
Usually moisture or food residue on the burner cap or the spark switch. Wipe the cap dry and seat it properly. If clicking continues on a dry burner, the switch or spark module may need replacement, which we can quote on site.
It speeds up corrosion on exposed metal, especially condenser coils, door screws and anything in an open garage. Regular cleaning slows it down. During a visit we point out early rust before it reaches electrical connections.
