High Island is the high ground of the Bolivar Peninsula: a salt dome that rises 38 feet above sea level, the highest point on the Gulf Coast between Mobile and the Yucatan. It is small and quiet, except in spring, when birders arrive for the migration.
What we find in High Island homes, and how it shapes a Bosch repair here.
Martin Dunman settled here in 1845, and the post office opened in 1897. Oil was found in the surrounding marshes in the 1930s, and about 200 flowing wells once ringed the dome. The community had around 300 residents in 2014.
High Island is at the eastern end of the Bolivar Peninsula Special Utility District, which buys treated surface water from the Lower Neches Valley Authority plant near Winnie. The district made that switch in 2004, after years of relying on groundwater wells.
Being on higher ground keeps many houses farther from tide water than the beach communities, but the town is still exposed to Gulf humidity and salt. Wooded lots around the bird sanctuaries also mean pollen and leaves that find their way into outdoor condensers.
Homes here tend to have practical, full-size appliances: a standard refrigerator, a 24-inch dishwasher and a full laundry pair. Some owners keep a separate freezer for hunting and fishing season.
High Island is near the junction of Highway 87 and Highway 124, closer to Winnie than to Galveston, so we often approach from I-10 rather than the ferry. Visits are scheduled ahead and grouped with other Bolivar Peninsula calls.
During spring migration, birders fill the Houston Audubon sanctuaries at Smith Oaks and Louis Smith, and parking along the roads can be tight. If your home is near the sanctuaries, let us know so we can plan arrival times. For refrigerators and freezers on wooded lots, keep the bottom grille clear of leaves and pollen. A quick vacuum of the condenser every few months helps compressors run less in summer heat.
Yes. We group Bolivar Peninsula visits and often come in from I-10 through Winnie. Tell us your address and we will offer the next available day for the peninsula route.
Make sure the door closes tightly, the coil is clean and there is space around the unit. If it still runs constantly or frost builds quickly, the gasket or defrost system may need attention, and we can test both.
It mainly affects parking and traffic near the sanctuaries in spring. We plan around it and confirm the best arrival time with you so the visit goes smoothly.
Book in about a minute, or call the desk. Same-day windows inside the Loop on most days, next-day across the rest of Houston.
