Voters chose to incorporate in April 1955, by 183 to 165, under the name Spring Valley; the word Village was added in 2007. The city now counts about 1,480 homes on residential streets policed by its own department, and every mailing address reads Houston rather than the village name.
The city pumps groundwater from its own well and blends it with surface water from the City of Houston under a groundwater reduction plan. Spring Valley Village describes the usual mix as about 70 percent well water and 30 percent Houston water.
Wind is the storm risk residents remember most lately. The May 2024 derecho knocked out power to roughly a million CenterPoint customers across the region, and Hurricane Beryl followed that July; restarts after long outages are when control boards and ice makers tend to act up.
